Calvinist Parrot ("we," "us," or "our") is a ministry project of Calvinist Parrot Ministries. We are committed to protecting your privacy and handling your data with transparency and care. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and what choices you have.

1. Information We Collect

Account Information

When you register for an account, we collect:

Name (display name)
Email address
Password (stored securely by our authentication provider, never accessible to us in plain text)

If you sign in with Google, we receive your name and email from your Google account. We do not receive or store your Google password.

Content You Create

When you use our features, we store the content you provide:

Chat conversations: Your questions and the AI-generated responses
Journal entries: Personal and discipleship journal text, along with AI-generated pastoral reflections and prayer suggestions
Prayer requests: Personal and family prayer request text, prayer history, and rotation schedules
Kids discipleship: Annual plans, monthly visions, and discipleship observations for children in your household
Family member information: Names, relationships, and birth dates of household members you add to the prayer tracker

Automatically Collected Information

Cookies: We use essential cookies for authentication (session token), anonymous guest identity, and OAuth flow state. We do not use advertising or third-party tracking cookies. See Section 5 for details.
Performance data: We use Vercel Analytics and Speed Insights to collect anonymized page views, Core Web Vitals, and general performance metrics. This data is not tied to your identity.
User agent: Your browser's user-agent string is forwarded to our authentication provider for session security purposes.

AI Memory

Our chat system learns your theological interests, preferred topics, and general spiritual context across conversations to provide more personalized pastoral responses. This memory is:

Tied to your user account and never shared with other users
Extracted automatically from your conversations using AI
Stored in our database alongside your profile

2. How We Use Your Information

We use your information solely to provide and improve the Calvinist Parrot service:

Deliver our features: Power chat conversations, journal reflections, prayer tracking, kids discipleship planning, and church discovery
Personalize responses: Tailor AI responses based on your denomination preference, theological interests, and conversation history
Generate AI content: Process your questions, journal entries, and discipleship logs through AI models to provide pastoral reflections, prayer suggestions, and theological guidance
Maintain your account: Authenticate your sessions, manage password resets, and sync data across devices
Improve the service: Analyze anonymized performance metrics to improve speed and reliability

We never use your data for advertising, sell your data to third parties, or train AI models with your personal content.

3. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate Calvinist Parrot. Your data is shared with them only as necessary to provide the service:

Each of these services has their own privacy policy governing how they handle data. When your content is sent to AI providers (OpenAI, Google Gemini), it is processed according to their API terms of service, which generally prohibit using API inputs for model training.

4. Data Retention

Account data: Retained as long as your account is active.
Chat history, journal entries, prayer requests, and discipleship data: Retained as long as your account exists. You can delete individual conversations from the chat sidebar.
AI memory: Retained alongside your profile and updated as you have new conversations.
Guest data: Anonymous chat sessions are identified by a guest cookie that expires after one year.
Performance analytics: Retained according to Vercel's data retention policies.

5. Cookies

We use a minimal set of cookies, all essential for the service to function:

We do not use cookies for advertising, tracking across websites, or any non-essential purpose.

6. Data Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your information:

Passwords are hashed and managed by Appwrite; we never have access to plain-text passwords
Session cookies are HTTP-only and secure (in production), preventing client-side script access
API routes require server-side authentication before accessing any user data
Database connections use SSL encryption
Rate limiting is applied to sensitive endpoints such as password recovery

7. Children's Privacy

Calvinist Parrot is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The Kids Discipleship feature is designed for parents to track their children's spiritual growth; parents enter information about their children as part of their own account.

If you believe a child under 13 has provided us personal information directly, please contact us so we can delete it.

8. Your Rights

Depending on your location, you may have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you
Correct inaccurate information in your profile
Delete your account and associated data
Export your data in a portable format

9. Open Source

Calvinist Parrot is open source. You can review our code, including how we handle your data, at our GitHub repository.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will note the "Last Updated" date at the top. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
